Not every rare comic looks rare. Some of the most valuable comics look completely ordinary — a 1977 35-cent price variant of Star Wars #1 looks identical to the standard 30-cent edition but is worth 50 times more. Our Rare Comic Identifier is trained to flag comics with rare characteristics: low official print runs, distribution problems that reduced survival numbers, recalled or destroyed editions, cover errors subsequently corrected, newsstand editions with dramatically lower survival rates, and high-ratio variants. It also flags potential significance based on content — newly announced media projects can instantly transform a previously common book into a valuable key.

• ✓The 35-cent price test variants (1977 Marvel) look identical to the 30-cent editions — only the price differs
• ✓Recalled comics (pulled from shelves due to content) are extremely rare — photograph carefully for identification
• ✓Regional distribution variants (certain states received different print runs) are underappreciated rarities
• ✓Error comics (misprints, inverted covers, missing colours) are almost always scarcer than the corrected editions
• ✓Comics from very small independent publishers often had print runs of 5,000–20,000 copies — far rarer than major publishers
